Description

Description: Elemi essential oil is obtained from the gum resin of the Elemi tree (Canarium luconicum) through the steam distillation process. The yield of essential oil from the plant mass is between 20 and 30%, depending on the purity of the resin.

Specific Characteristics: Elemi oil is a colorless to yellow liquid with a characteristic mild-fresh and citrusy aroma, accompanied by a slight frankincense note. It easily dissolves in alcohol (1:1, ethanol), vegetable oils, and other essential oils but is almost insoluble in water. Key components include limonene and alpha-phellandrene, with traces of alpha-terpinene and methyl eugenol. Characteristic compounds are (-)elemol (7-14%) and elemicin (1-5%).

Applications: Elemi essential oil has medicinal properties. In ancient Egypt, Elemi was one of the aromas used in the mummification process. The essential oil can promote healing of simple wounds and assist in combating inflammation. In cases of bronchitis, it can be used through friction due to its mucolytic characteristics. For indigestion and diarrhea, Elemi essential oil can be applied to the gastrointestinal tract. Elemicin, present in small concentrations (1-5%), acts as a parasympathomimetic, similar to myristicin found in nutmeg.

Aromatherapy utilizes Elemi essential oil for mental disorders and eruptions. It removes the sense of mental weakness and aids in resolving possible difficult decisions. Using an aromatic lamp as a room deodorizer, Elemi essential oil helps in meditation and reflection on the inner world. Therefore, Elemi essential oil creates a healthy detachment from everyday life.

CAUTION: Always use diluted in a base oil or another solvent.
