Description: Cajeput essential oil is derived from the leaves and branches of the cajeput tree (Melaleuca leucadendra) and is obtained through the steam distillation process. The yield ranges between 0.8 and 1.0%.

Special Characteristics: Cajeput essential oil is a yellow to green liquid. It has a distinctive aromatic scent accompanied by fresh eucalyptus notes. The essential oil easily dissolves in alcohol (ethanol), vegetable oils, and other essential oils. It is almost insoluble in water. The main components are 1,8-cineole, alpha-terpineol, pinene, linalool, and limonene.

Cajeput essential oil ages quickly, and the oxidation products can be allergenic. Therefore, special attention should be given to the freshness of Cajeput essential oil.

Applications: Regarding the use of Cajeput essential oil in the medical field, some applications have been observed over time. In the Asian region, Cajeput essential oil was considered a panacea for a long time. The Dutch brought the oil to Europe in the 17th century, and it quickly became known for its medicinal properties, especially for infectious diseases and toothaches. Inhalation or use in baths with Cajeput oil presents mucolytic effects for colds and congestion. It also has antibacterial properties, especially against Staphylococcus and Enterococcus, for the skin and mucous membranes. Additionally, it exhibits antiviral effects against genital herpes and influenza.

The analgesic action of Cajeput essential oil is particularly used against headaches, toothaches, and ear pain. Here, the intake of the essential oil through friction, inhalation, and aromatic candles is preferred.
